What's left of what was to be a 5 star resort: complete with massive jetty, tennis courts and swimming pools located in the picturesque Rarotonga.
It was built by the Italian Mafia to traffic large amounts of cocaine from South America to Rarotonga then to Australia and New Zealand.
It was mostly complete before the New Zealand police caught onto these plans. By then the mob had already fled (I believe back to Italy).
The locals were not informed of the ongoing investigation and grew impatient on the resort's progress.
Once word spread, the locals felt (rightfully) robbed of their land. They gutted anything of worth as reimbursement, leaving just the concrete shell.
There has been several plans on what do with the shell; but a full agreement by the island's monarchy and the locals is yet to be met.
It's public knowledge the casinos in Sydney, Australia are run by the mob. Seeing ongoing projects currently happening in Brisbane and Gold Coast, it only makes me wonder their true purpose.
There was said to be a scale diorama inside but I didn't find it on my visit.
